Sustainable Wales with the help of Fairtrade Wales’ National Coordinator Elen Jones, is organizing The Fairtrade Marquee, in James Street from 11.00am
Fairtrade Fun - Miri Masnach Deg will feature short Fair Trade stories in English and Welsh, on the themes of cocoa and bananas. To include ‘Charlie & Lola’, ‘The Banana who refused to turn yellow’, and ‘Juliana’s bananas.’
There will also be craft activities including colouring and badge-making, free chocolate for young children, a quiz, a cocktail demo and later a marquee for adults selling Sustainable Wales’s special recipe Buck’s Fizz and Rose Berry Bliss.
The Green Room, above SUSSED, at 5, James St. will offer two talks from 2pm, including ‘The importance of BEES and BEE Keeping’, and ‘Tools for Self Reliance’.
BEE Fruitful’s, Jon Milgate, will provide an empty hive and beekeeping equipment (suit, smoker, etc). The public will ‘walk through the hive’, learning about the different bees in the hive, their roles and lifespan.
The talk will also look at flight, forage, what’s available to bees in this area, why bees are important, and why they are under threat.
There will be photo opportunities, so people can have a ‘hands-on’, informal experience, rather than just sit & listen.
From 3pm we will also learn from John Hanson about the Tools For Self Reliance charity and its relevance to current situations in Africa, e.g. ebola. The talk will be illustrated by examples of work undertaken by the local group.
Interactive art
Installation and Land Artist Siobhan Grice M.A. will create a figure made from recycled materials.
“My work aims to raise awareness for people to take care of themselves and the world we inhabit.
The figure I’ll make will represent Mother Earth with her message to recycle and protect her natural resources.
Please come and watch or join in the making in John Street where she will lay”

Background to the Jamboree
On Saturday 28th March, as a member of the newly formed Town Centre Partnership, Sustainable Wales will be holding a Town Centre Jamboree in Porthcawl. This event, backed by Bridgend County Borough Council, will involve traders, community groups, and charities in a vibrant spring-time celebration of everything that Porthcawl has to offer. Activities will suit all ages and will include a wide variety of street stalls, music, a live interactive art installation, story-telling, workshops, talks, crafts, demonstrations, information and much more in a bustling, festival atmosphere.
This event will aim to be fun, increase the number of people entering John Street and James Street, extend the time they spend there, and encourage them to explore the local businesses.
Margaret Minhinnick, director of Sustainable Wales said, “Street party events have proven to be highly popular and successful in other towns and have developed into annual events and it is hoped that we can replicate such successes here. The Porthcawl Town Centre Jamboree gives traders, charities and community organisations the opportunity to showcase the unique quality and diversity of what our town has to offer, and to do so in a lively, inviting and playful atmosphere.”
