Alwyn Jones 1932-2012

Sustainable Wales regrets the death of Alwyn Jones, a great friend and colleague.

Robert and Margaret Minhinnick first met Alwyn Jones when they were working for Friends of the Earth Cymru in the 1980s. Alwyn was of help to FoE Cymru, helping with talks, supporting various events and conferences.

Later, Alwyn was of great practical assistance to Sustainable Wales, offering invaluable accountancy skills. It was Alwyn, at the end of the 1990s, who tutored Richard Thomas on the necessary work of the charity’s book-keeping. Richard became acting CEO of ‘Cylch’, the recycling organisation.

Robert Minhinnick worked closely with Alwyn on the volume ‘Green Agenda: Essays on the Environment of Wales’ (1994), published by Seren.

Alwyn Jones helped develop one of the first ‘green degrees’ in a UK university, BA Honours in ‘Environmental and Social Values’ at the University of Glamorgan. Prior to this he stood for parliament for the Green Party in 1983. More recently he was the Treasurer of the Schumacher Society, a stalwart of Cardiff’s ‘Philosophy Café’, and numerous other societies that allowed him to use his restless intelligence.

His friendship, ideas, knowledge and enthusiasm will be deeply missed.
